Europe is a continent that extends over the western fifth of the Eurasian land mass. Although geographically it is a subcontinent that together with Asia forms the continent of Eurasia, it is historically and culturally usually regarded as a separate continent. This indicates that the term “Europe” is not exhausted in its geographical definition, but also refers to historical, cultural, political, economic, legal and idealistic aspects.

With over 740 million inhabitants (2015) living in an area of about ten million square kilometres, Europe is one of the more densely populated parts of the world.
