Six Days in Lindau: A Short Getaway on Lake Constance

We had six days in Lindau ahead of us and were looking forward to a few relaxing days on Lake Constance. So we packed our bags and set off by train from Tamm toward Lindau.

The trip went well overall, even though the rail replacement service from Kressbronn to Lindau-Reutin was a bit of a hassle. But finally, we made it: We were there!

Our lodging, the Altstadtherz vacation apartment, was the first lovely surprise. Located right in the heart of the old town and just a few minutes from the train station, it was a real little gem for us. Lovingly and thoughtfully decorated, the name really fit perfectly.

The included “Echt-Bodensee-Card” was especially handy. It allowed us to use public transportation around Lindau, giving us plenty of flexibility even without a car.

Three Days at the Beach and Lots of Sun

The weather was exceptionally kind to us. The sun shone for three days straight, and so the Lindau Beach became our second home.

We took Line 5 from the train station to the Strandbad stop, then walked a short distance—perfect and completely hassle-free.

We really liked the beach itself. The many large trees, which provided plenty of shade, were especially pleasant. Lake Constance, however, showed an unusual side: the water level was about 1.2 meters below normal. As a result, getting into the water wasn’t exactly a pleasure, and the smell was also quite unpleasant for us.
So we preferred the 50-meter pool. Swimming, relaxing, soaking up the sun, and absolutely no stress!

Lindau in the Evening

After spending our days at the beach, we enjoyed our evenings on the island. A festival with lots of booths and music was taking place on the West Promenade. We strolled leisurely past the booths, looked around, and simply let the summery atmosphere wash over us.

But our personal highlight every evening was the sunset.
Time and again, we found ourselves drawn out to the water. And indeed, every evening was different and beautiful.
Particularly impressive was the moonrise at the harbor entrance, right between the New Lighthouse and the Löwenmole. Moments like these are simply priceless.

A Special Evening in Bregenz

On the fourth day, one of the highlights of our trip was on the agenda: the Bregenz Festival with “La Traviata.”

We took a boat from Lindau to Bregenz. Even the journey across Lake Constance was an experience in itself. The tickets cost 96 euros per person, and our seats on the right side of the auditorium were really good.

We really enjoyed the production. However, there was a thunderstorm warning that evening. So we kept glancing up at the sky with some concern. But we were lucky: it stayed dry!
During the performance, a woman sitting next to us had a fainting spell. Fortunately, she was helped quickly, and after she put her legs up, she felt better again.

After the performance, we took the train back to Lindau around 12:30 a.m. The return trip was already included in the festival ticket, which was very convenient after such a long evening.

Rain, a City Tour, and a Curious Story About a Lion

Our last day was actually supposed to be another really active one. But the weather forecast called for rain, and sure enough, we had a shower or two here and there.
So we took it easy and stayed on the island.

On a guided tour of the city, we learned a lot of interesting things about Lindau. We couldn’t help but chuckle at the story of the Bavarian lion in the harbor. That’s because the lion has its rear end pointing toward Munich.
The reason is said to have been a dispute over payment: Maximilian II of Bavaria initially refused to cover the costs. As a result, the stonemason simply turned the lion around on the spot. When payment was finally made, the lion just stayed that way.

Did the story really happen exactly like that? Regardless, it’s definitely a nice Lindau anecdote!

The Bus Ride Home

For the return trip, we decided to take the 200 bus to Friedrichshafen. There, we transferred to the regional express train to Stuttgart Central Station.
That went smoothly, too.

And so our five wonderful days at Lake Constance came to an end.

We really enjoyed Lindau. The combination of the historic old town, Lake Constance, the harbor, great dining, and plenty of options for getting around by bus and train makes the island a fantastic travel destination.

We especially loved the cozy vacation apartment, the sunny days at the beach, the evenings by the lake, and, of course, the Bregenz Festival.

And the sunsets?
We’ll probably remember them for a long time to come.

Our conclusion: Lindau Island is always worth a visit, and six days actually went by way too fast!
